Nabokov experienced colour with each sound, Kandinsky heard music with a splash of paint, both had synaesthesia, a rare neurological condition which causes the senses to intertwine. Only 4% of the population has synaethesia.

Skin, however, never simply exists or remains the same but is bound to cultural implications that have read and rendered it in different ways throughout history.
